George Lucas only takes on projects that he thinks will be masterpieces. Steven Spielberg will take a lot more risks, which leads to a few duds here and there.

Of course, you can find other top movies from these directors, but these are the two that would make the top of the list from an objective perspective. While E.T. replaced Star Wars as the highest grossing movie ever made, The Empire Strikes Back has withstood the test of time much better.
